Working on Your Dental Health Needs with Our Hygienists in Milton Keynes

We all need to visit the dental hygienist regularly. We need to ensure we are on the right track and any issues are tended to straight away. We don’t all need significant restorative treatment, but getting the right preventive care advice is important. Visiting your hygienist is a simple and easy way to achieve and maintain excellent dental health.

Dental hygienists use preventive, educational and therapeutic methods to help prevent oral diseases whilst helping patients to achieve and maintain oral health. They will work with you to determine the best oral hygiene routine for your individual needs.

You don’t need to be a patient of Brooklands Dental Clinic in order to regularly visit our hygienists. Simply ask your own private or NHS dentist to refer you to us via our website or over the phone and we will be happy to see you.

Your First Visit with Our Hygienists

Your first appointment will involve our hygienist taking some recordings; these range from a pocket chart, if there is a sign of extensive gum disease or a plaque and bleeding score. The latter highlights problem areas. Plaque is prevalent when brushing is inadequate. This usually results in bleeding of the gums. Your hygienist will highlight areas that need more attention and educate you on how to improve your brushing technique.

Gum disease is the largest factor of tooth loss in adult life. The milder form of gum disease is called Gingivitis. Your gums will be red and swollen and may bleed easily when you brush your teeth (this is often masked by smoking). Around 50% of all pregnant women experience dental problems at some point during their pregnancy. The most common is Gingivitis. Changing hormone levels can make your gums more susceptible to plaque attack. At Brooklands Dental Clinic, we generally recommend routine visits every 6 months for a thorough examination and cleaning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cost of a dental hygiene appointment in Milton Keynes?

The cost of a dental hygiene appointment in Milton Keynes at Brooklands Dental Clinic starts from £78. The fee varies depending on the actual services provided. Patients are advised to inquire about fees and discuss payment options with us in advance.

What does a dental hygienist do?

Dental hygienists play a crucial role in preventive oral care. They focus on maintaining and improving oral health by providing services such as teeth cleaning, scaling, and root planing. Additionally, they educate patients on proper oral hygiene practices and offer guidance on preventing dental issues.

How often should I see a dental hygienist?

The frequency of dental hygiene visits depends on individual oral health needs. Generally, biannual visits are recommended, but individuals with specific concerns or conditions may require more frequent appointments. A dental hygienist can assess and recommend an appropriate schedule based on your oral health.

Can a dental hygienist diagnose dental issues?

While dental hygienists can identify signs of oral health issues, they do not diagnose conditions. They collaborate with dentists, referring patients for further evaluation when necessary. Regular hygiene appointments help in early detection and prevention of dental problems.

Is seeing a dental hygienist different from seeing a dentist?

Yes, the roles differ. Dentists diagnose and treat dental issues, including surgeries and restorations. Dental hygienists focus on preventive care, performing cleanings, educating on oral hygiene, and assisting in identifying potential concerns.

What are the benefits of regular dental hygiene appointments?

Regular dental hygiene appointments offer numerous benefits, including the prevention of gum disease, cavities, and bad breath. Cleanings remove plaque and tartar, enhancing oral health, while professional guidance helps patients maintain optimal oral hygiene practices at home.

Do dental hygienists clean and polish teeth?

Yes, one of the primary tasks of dental hygienists is cleaning and polishing teeth. This process involves removing plaque and tartar, followed by polishing to achieve a smooth surface and prevent future buildup.

Can a dental hygienist apply fluoride treatments?

Yes, dental hygienists can apply fluoride treatments as part of preventive care. Fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel, reducing the risk of cavities. The application is a quick and painless process during a hygiene appointment.

How can a dental hygienist help with bad breath?

Dental hygienists address bad breath by identifying its underlying causes, such as gum disease or poor oral hygiene. They offer personalised recommendations for improving oral care practices and may recommend products to maintain fresh breath.

Is it painful to undergo a dental hygiene session?

Dental hygiene sessions are typically not painful. Some individuals may experience mild discomfort or sensitivity during certain procedures, but dental hygienists prioritise patient comfort and use techniques to minimise any discomfort.

Can a dental hygienist remove teeth stains?

Yes, dental hygienists can effectively remove surface stains during teeth cleanings. For deeper stains, they may provide recommendations for teeth-whitening products or procedures.

Can a dental hygienist spot signs of oral cancer?

Dental hygienists can identify abnormal oral conditions, but they do not diagnose oral cancer. They play a vital role in early detection by observing and referring patients for further evaluation if necessary.

How does smoking or tobacco use affect dental hygiene?

Smoking and tobacco use can significantly impact dental hygiene, leading to issues such as gum disease, tooth discolouration, and increased risk of oral cancer. Dental hygienists provide guidance on managing the oral health consequences of tobacco use.

Can a dental hygienist help with teeth sensitivity?

Yes, dental hygienists can provide guidance on managing teeth sensitivity. They may recommend desensitising toothpaste, fluoride treatments, and adjustments to oral care practices to alleviate discomfort.

What is the recommended age for a child's first dental hygiene visit?

A child’s first dental hygiene visit is recommended around the age of one or when the first tooth erupts. Early visits help establish good oral hygiene habits and monitor oral development.

Can a dental hygienist provide advice on orthodontic care?

While dental hygienists can offer general advice on maintaining oral hygiene with orthodontic appliances, specific orthodontic care is typically provided by orthodontists. Hygienists may emphasise the importance of thorough cleaning during orthodontic treatment.

Had my first hygienist appointment with Sarah yesterday. She deserves the rating, my teeth look and feel clean and smooth. Sarah was gentle and thorough, hugely important to those of us with a fear of the invasiveness of dentistry. Next appointment booked!

I haven’t been to the dentist in over 10 years due to a very bad experience. My mother In law recommended Brooklands dental and I’m so pleased I listened to her. My teeth are in an awful state, I had a lot of tears leading up to my appointment and I cried in there too but Kirsty the receptionist was very reassuring, so kind and checked I was ok whilst I waited. Ana was amazing, she could see I was nervous but kept me calm, explained throughout what she was doing, put a dental plan in place with no pressure to commit to it. She didn’t judge the state of my teeth and was just so lovely and reassuring. I feel very confident that she is going to help me get my teeth and gums back on track so thank you so so much for your help and understanding

I have been going to Brooklands dental clinic for a number of years. Before going here I hadn't been to a dentist in over 20 years as I was petrified of dentists. However circumstances forced me to go. They were brilliant with me, kind, gentle and understanding. All the staff were fantastic. I have now been going for a long time and had lots of different treatments and I am finally over my fear. I highly recommend this practice for its kindness, efficiency and skill.
